I’m back, finally. This weekend has been a whirlwind of eating, sleeping, working, and rain. The weekend was entitled “Challenge the Counselors”. The staff is all new except for Schlitz: my mom, Bugg’n: the director from last year turned program director, Abby: former lifeguard now assistant director, and good ol’ Grasshopper: a young and shy but very awesome counselor. The new staff is very young, most are about 19 to 21. This weekend was part of their training. Personally, I think it was a pretty good idea. Last year the staff was very overwhelmed when the first campers arrived. This way the campers knew what was going on and so did their troop leaders. The leaders watched the counselors and reported back to the admin staff. The admin even planned a few scenarios for them including one where a child pretended to drown, another when a few campers refused to use the latrines. But many other unplanned disasters happened, my favorite being when a troop leader wouldn’t let her children drink the water because she claimed she was some sort of water advisor and she can tell bad water when she sees it. It was hilarious. Then there was our disaster of a cookout. My unit was simply making mac ‘n cheese and salad. Ha. First we couldn’t get the fire started. Then the water wouldn’t boil. After that, the noodles wouldn’t cook. I was supervising kids that wear slicing the cheese for the macaroni. It was 5 hours until we would eat. So I um, borrowed, some cheese. So did Liz, and the live-in, and any kid that was hungry. So we ran low on cheese. We finally just gave up and Abby brought some bread and peanut butter and jelly. Liz and I ate peanut butter sandwiches in the back room because, technically, we aren’t supposed to eat until all the kids eat. Liz and I weren’t really campers this week, we were assistants. First I assisted Abby by stocking all the units with propane, TP, sponges, matches, and garbage bags and stapling signs to all the latrines and a map in the kitchen shelter. Today Liz and I ran the Trading Post where they sell all things girlscout. Pinewood hoodies, crews, pencils, postcards, etc. It was pretty fun. I helped out with arts ‘n crafts all of Saturday. Mostly I just started a LOT of square stitch boondongle. But it was something to do. And the best part is that Liz and I earned two Pinewood hoodies and some chocolate from Abby. Goody. So far, so good. And the admin is awesome this year. Bugg’n is the program director, she’s awesome. Abby is the assistant director, she’s awesome. And the director is Kim. She’s new but still very awesome. Awesome.
