HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

happy halloween

i wore my costume to school today, and it was a big hit with the in-crowd. unfortunately, that crowd is limited to a select few, so i had to explain it quite often, but it was worth it to have the best costume ever.

“i’m a three-hole punch version of lan. ’cause you can have me either way — plain white lan, or three-hole punch.”

kid: lanni, what are you supposed to be? a dalmation?
lan: yes.

other kid: lanni, are you a dice?!
lan: yes.

another kid: lanni, are you dressed like a snowman?
lan: yes.

and one last kid: lanni, your costume is lame.
lan: yes.

you tell me

and now a question from pete:
“This is a little quiz that I’ve been asking a few people. There are no right answers. What do you think 3 of the worlds biggest problems are? And mildly expain your answers. This would be on the human being side of things. The world itself would get along well without us, on its voyage through space and time. The Canadians can answer this too if they wish.”

(i’ll post my answers in the comments, to get you guys started! pete, you tell me your answers too.)

the ACT wasn’t too bad. i finished the english part with a few minutes to spare (as much as i hate english, it’s the subject i always do best in), which was nice. i didn’t have time for the last 6 questions of the math part, so that was pretty lame. i finished the reading and science questions just in time, the same for the essay. i think i did average. well, i hope i did average. i’ll find out on november 14, i believe.

and i had the car for all of today (and yesterday after school), so that was cool. i was able to drive to work, drive home, drive to get a sub for dinner, drive to the exam, drive stabby and i to lunch, drive stabby home, drive to the grocery store, drive to borders…

i finally bought the end. i think i’ll go read it now.

i should pro’ly go to bed now

sooooooo the ACT is tomorrow. i’m extremely nervous, but i know i need to stop that. i’m going to be at 10:30 because the test is at 8. i would have gone to bed earlier, but if i try to go to sleep to early, it just takes me twice as long to get to sleep because i mentally freak out.

but other than that, my day was swell. i got to drive the dentmobile to work after school, my mom left it in the parking lot for me before she left for saratoga springs with the rest of my family. and since they’re not home, i’ve rigged up 3 alarm clocks, because i tend to sleep through them.

a cacophany of confusion

well so today was nice. subs in math and econ because it was new teacher training day or something. this meant i had noto for the first time ever, and i have to say, he really is a good teacher. i learned more about the entire unit during his one class then my regular teacher has taught me the whole week. well maybe not that much, but it seemed like a lot.

and during mentoring club a middle schooler named sarah and i put up posters around the school, which ended up taking like a half an hour. she’s a nice kid though, so it was fun. she designs websites like me also : )

oh, and i’m designing buttons for “she stoops to conquer,” the play at our school that my good friend dine happens to be in.

and jay hamme comes up to me and says he found my website when he googled himself, which made me laugh (mainly because this happened last year when ms. matzky, my phys ed teacher, was googling herself). so if you are reading this, jay or ms. matzky, nice to see your google skillz are still tip-top.

college schmollege

so i promised myself i wouldn’t get all freaked out about applying to college, but i guess it was inevitable. i’m not exactly freaking out (at this point), but i’m very nervous. so far i have the following colleges on my list: SUNY geneseo, SUNY binghamton, RIT, U of R. all four are what i would consider “reach” schools for me (binghamton being the extreme reach). i have a 3.89 gpa, but i have never taken an advanced course. not one. so i’m worried that these colleges will look at my transcript, notice the lack of ap’s and such, and discard it. plus i don’t even know if i’m going to do well on the act exam (which is on saturday). i think i need a “safety” school. hmm. recommendations, anyone?

college teen angst

it started out nice

school was fine (although i thougt it was tuesday most of the day). work was fun. i’m liking work more and more every day. at first it was boring, but now the kids just crack me up (lanni, i’m sweating so much my pants are falling down!).

yep, my day was fine. that is, until i started my homework. actually, scratch that, i didn’t even start my homework yet when the not-so-fineness began. i decided i should probably organize the stuff for my teacher recommendations (for college), right? so i find my common app, i fill the teacher eval parts out, and find 8 envelopes, i stamp ‘em, i address them, i decide i should print address labels, i type the addresses, i print them, i paste ‘em, i rewrite my entire activity sheet, i print it, i print it again with page numbers, i print my deadline checklist, and i paperclip it all together. at this point it’s been 2.5 hours since i began this fiasco. and then i did my homework. and i’m actually going to see if i can go to bed without outlining two pages for econ (i always have 50 minutes before homeroom to do nothing, and i think i’ll actually spend some of that time doing something for a change). wish me luck!

dream-inside-a-dream

last night i dreamed that i owned a vespa (oh wouldn’t that be wonderful) and i rode it to school and work. it was yellow and it was amazing. but then i got pulled over because i forgot to wear a helmet, and then in the dream i had a dream that i was in an accident while riding my yellow vespa (because i wasn’t wearing a helmet), so i was in a coma in a hospital. i could still think and see, but i couldn’t move. but then in my dream i woke up out of the dream i was having, and i discovered that i still could not move, even though i wasn’t in the accident because that was in the dream-inside-a-dream.

so yeah. that was pretty cool. not the not-being-able-to-move part, the having-a-vespa part (duh).

halloween on oct. 21

so today was the brighton rec halloween party, and i was there doing the same thing i’ve done for 5 years straight, but this year i was paid! now that i’m on the payroll as an employee of brighton rec, i now get paid for working at the special events i’ve volunteered at since 7th grade. this is very cool. so this year i ran a table in arts-n-crafts making pumpkins (with legs and hats) out of construction paper. the kids loved it. there were some very cute costumes this year, my favorite being a homemade one. a kid had taken a white round-top trash can and spray painted the top silver and glued foam shapes on it so that he looked exactly like… R2-D2! it was amazing. i wish i was that brilliant when i was a kid. i even have the best R2 whistle. sounds just like him. that’s actually the only impression of anything that i can do. the only one.

and after the party my dad and liz and i finally finished the front yard landscaping. we resized a garden on the side (i made a very nice curve out of bricks), we leveled the new lawn (the entire thing!) and then planted grass seed there and in the front part of the old garden that is no longer garden. the grass is only temporary, we’ll have to replant it next year because it probably won’t last the winter. i just realized how incredibly lame it is to talk about planting grass.

oh, and i think i want to go to borders tomorrow. i’ve been meaning to pick up the end (of teh unfortunate events series), but i keep forgeting. the original plan was to stop by on oct. 13 (the release date), but i of course forgotted.
