happy new years!

last day of winter camp today. it was just me and melissa, but luckily we only had 17 kids. pretty good day, much better than friday. yummy poison did his “draw a pizza!” bit, and added some new material. after he tripped and fell i asked, “can you walk?” and he said, “i can walk. can of juice!” i was literally rolling on the floor laughing.

OMG PUSHING DAISIES IS THE MOST AMAZING SHOW EVER AND MY HEART IS PERMANENTLY MELTED BY NED AND HIS AMAZING SMILES AND I CAN’T EVEN EXPRESS HOW THIS SHOW MAKES ME FEEL. i never thought i’d ever make any statement like this, but: ned > jim. i can’t believe i just wrote that. but srsly, his relationship with chuck is just so melty, it’s insane. guh. double guh.

mostly awesome

some schlitzers and my family went to the “our bodies” exhibit at RMSC today. you know, that science exhibit that has actual dead bodies in it. while it totally weirded me out, it was pretty interesting. but the best part of the outing was when we played museum hide and seek with stevie’s dad, larry. he’d go somewhere in the museum and we would run around looking for him. sometimes he would call with a hint, which sometimes helped, and sometimes made it worse. i also got to play in sand and stick my face on a glacier. haha, it was awesome.

and two bits of awesomeness for everyone:
(1) i made the dean’s list!
(2) i got a raise!

so yeah, good day. (except that i couldn’t go to the mrs. skannotto show that i’ve been waiting for because i was unable to find anyone willing to go. well, you can’t win them all.)

friday camp

the third day of winter camp was partly terrible, and partly awesome.

who knew that one kid could ruin so many staff members lives at once? he wasn’t in the room for five minutes before he broke a rule. i’d say he would do something he wasn’t supposed to about every three minutes, no matter what we did. i even caught him going through my bag once, and another time he had the keychain i had on my bag clipped on to his boondoggle necklace. what the heck. he shut a door on someone, spilled paint on purpose, ripped the bulletin board, broke the window frame, ruined several block towers, said many swear words to other kids, and more. the worst part is that none of it is bad enough to get him kicked out of camp. all we can do is stick him in time outs and talk to the person that picks him up. whatevs.

but the other kids are awesome and totally make up for it. wendy (a boy) and skippy (a girl) are the new “jr. counselors” since they’re pretty much the best ever. they aren’t really that fantastic at listening to what we say, but for some reason we don’t understand, we still think they’re awesome. they got charisma. and yummy poison (a boy) is this camper from korea and he is probably the funniest kid i’ve ever met (besides the kid that originated the nickname “louise”). he speaks in fractured english, and it’s awesome. i told him to draw a card when we were playing a game, and he yelled, “DRAW A PIZZA!” and mimed drawing a pizza in the air.

winter camp

first day of winter camp! first day being assistant director! first day getting up at 7:30am since the ol’ registration fiasco!

today went well. wow, i had almost forgotten what it’s like to have kids that behave. i actually had a great day, even though 8 and a half hours passed by kind of slowly (maybe mega-slowly). my favorite part of the day was group time: one group went outside (snow!), one stayed in the room, and one went in the gym. i was the gym counselor. since there aren’t very many kids at camp to begin with, i only had five in the gym with me. but we managed to play quite a few games (knockout, jump the brook, wallball, hand games, and gold silver bronze). it was actually quite fun. and later we made a really cute banner that says “WINTER CAMP ‘07″ on it, the kids colored in the block letters i drew, and everyone traced their hand on construction paper, decorated it, and glued it on. aw.

three more days of this! i’m pretty alright with it, actually.

the xmas post!

merry christmas!

happy birthday jesus, sorry your party is so lame.

the brag list:
- JBL speakers
- found, by davy rothbart
- a plethora of gift cards
- more jewelry than i could wear in a year
- several animals of the stuffed variety
- good ol’ cold hard cash

last night was the schlitzer party at my aunt jean’s house, which was fun. stevie’s in town, so that was excellent.

today was the schlitzer party at my grandparent’s house, which was also fun. steve, liz, aunt marta, and i played excellent games such as taboo, a super fun game i just discovered, and rummikrub, a super fun game i’ve been playing for years.

and i saw juno with mike too, after the party. OMG it was amazing. the moldy peaches did a majority of the soundtrack! i was listening and i was like, whoa, this sounds just like them. and then they played “anybody else but you,” which is my favorite song by them, and i was like, whoa, this IS them. awesome. oh, and the movie itself was excellent too. megafunny. supercool. et cetera.

REUNION
our high school class’s first reunion was today. kate and i had lunch and then drove over. i saw lots of people i haven’t seen in a few months (chelsea, michaela, kayla, dinah, etc.), several teachers i didn’t mind so much (mrs. palmer, mr. hiller, mr. mitchell, etc.), and some people i’ve actually seen recently (liz, mike, leah, etc.). so all in all a good time.

WORK

the children put stickers on me this afternoon.

i also have a little story about today. so, we were in the gym. it was me and four other counselors. they were trying to start a game, but the kids wouldn’t be quiet or sit still. the other counselors spent about ten minutes trying to individually quiet kids by either giving them empty threats or yelling at them. after realizing that they were only making things worse, i stepped in and told them all to stop talking to the kids, to ignore them completely until they realized that we were not going to begin until they were quiet. the entire effort took about 25 minutes, but it was completely worth it because it actually worked. i felt really proud.

MOVIES
i saw national treasure 2 tonight! it was pretty awesome. although highly unbelievable. but i still loved it. i really love big history conspiracies like that. that’s why i loved the davinci code and angels & demons. they’re just so interesting. i’m lame like that.

MUSIC
the fiery furnaces are playing at the bug jar on january 21! but the thing about the bug jar is it’s 18+. who would i go with? now that i think about it, i don’t think i have any friends that like them. hmm.

work was considerably better today. i did a fair share of disciplining though, i can’t believe the staff can let the kids get that disorganized and not care. whatever.

so today some kids were playing outburst junior, and the category was “planets.” there are 10 items on a card, and obviously 9 planets (well… nevermind, we won’t get in to that). anyway, the kids had guessed all 9, since they learn that in school and it’s fresh in their minds, but they couldn’t get the 10th one. so the boy holding the card came over and asked where planet “krypton” was, because he couldn’t remember if it was before pluto or after it. hahaha.

arrrr

wow, can’t believe i forgot to mention this yesterday, but i have officially moved into my new bedroom, aka liz’s old bedroom. it’s a bit smaller than the batcave was, but i’m fine with that. i will post photos as soon and i get everything how i want it.

as for work, it was good. well, mostly good. you see, the girl i babysitted a couple months ago, britt, is a doll when she’s by herself. but when you put her with her friends, she’s a totally different kid. so when i was in the homework room, she was there with two of her friends and they were playing some sort of pretending game. i asked them several times to stop yelling and running and touching the senior citizen’s christmas decorations, and they weren’t listening. so i ended up yelling at them (loud enough for becky to hear, i might add) and kicking them out of the homework room. when she was getting her stuff together, britt said to me, “where’s the lanni from last year? i liked her much better.” oh my god it was awful. i never wanted to be the counselor that is always yelling, but i think that’s who i’m turning into. i feel terrible. but becky said i did the right thing, so i don’t feel bad about what i did. i just don’t like turning into the counselor the kids hate.

school / work

i’m done with my first semester of college! my anthropology final was this morning. we’re not going to talk about that.

i got to go to work today! my ribs hurt from hugs. it felt like the good ol’ days again. except there are considerably more kids now. and they are rowdier. but i suspect this might be partly because of the staff this year. i don’t think i heard any of them yell at the kids. i’d ask if they are allowed to sit on the stage or something, and they’d say no, but that telling them that didn’t make them stop. um, okay? so you’re just going to let them do whatever they want? so i did a bit more yelling today than i’m used to, but whatever. i still had fun.

i’m working 3pm-6pm all this week, and 8:30am-5:30pm next week. i think i’m also working afterschool in january before i go back to geneseo. hooray!

weekend

went home this weekend. friday was a stabby day (movie: the golden compass, dinner: wild noodles). the movie was awesome. the golden compass and the other books in the trilogy have been tied with the harry potter series for years ever since my dad gave me the books for christmas. i obviously loved the books infinity times more, but the movie was pretty darn good. except it ended extremely abruptly, guaranteeing that they are doing the next two books too. which is awesome. the third is my favorite, even though i bawl upon finishing it. so what, i’m a girl.

today was a curls day (movie: i am legend, shopping: record archive). curls, her bf jon, and i saw i am legend at the imax theater, which i haven’t been to in years. it’s amazing. but watching a scary movie in it is a little unnerving, i’m not going to lie. the movie was still fantastic though. and record archive was awesome. i got a cd for myself (under the influence of giants’ self-titled album) and a cd for a christmas present. good day.

i’m back at the ’seo, drove myself in the car that now has a glove compartment that’s velcroed shut and a trunk that takes me 15 minutes to break into. oh, and no hub caps. but it does have three snow tires now. but not four.
