new scooterit’s a schwinn newport 50. it’s black. it has a maximum speed of 30 MPH. it’s faster than my bike. it’s cheaper than a car. it gets like 100 miles per gallon. it’s awesome. we got it from a store called urban village scooters, and we actually bought it two weeks ago. some trubs with the dmv prevented us from riding it until today. well, at least we have it now. my dad taught me how to ride it after work in the MCC parking lot (same lot i learned to drive a car in!). it’s not as difficult as i thought it would be, but my dad still wants me to practice more. hopefully i’ll be able to ride it to work by monday : ) |

sweetness!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i know, right? i’m super excited : )
That is seriously awesome. Now I want one!!!
haha, you should get one! they are super fun : )
honey you need a license to ride a scooter in New York state
the engine is only 50cc. i don’t need a license. i’m not an idiot, you know.
you can get a permit in the meantime but…check this link out.

i don’t need a permit. it’s a limited use motercycle.

Under 30MPH is class B, so any class license is okay. If it went 31MPH, it would be class A and would require a Class M/MJ License/Permit. So, just barely :-)
Congratulations, by the way!
thanks! i was about to tell curls to go ask you about it, hahaha. thanks for backing me up.
OK I get it I was wrong. Perhaps I am just testy b/c I had to go through a weekend long safety course and spend quite a lot of money to get going on my motorcycle with a license. BTW, it was this weekend and I passed.
yayayayay! congratulations! that’s so great, i’m really proud of you. i could never ride i motorcycle, haha.

what’s this link proving?
alright alright
It was not meant antagonistically.
<3
It is a Class B Limited Use Motorcycle, only a Class D license is required.
omg thats so cool lanni!!! u should get a hairmet like JD
haha, that was for his bike, silly! i have considered naming my scooter sasha, but i get weirded out when people name inanimate objects.
do you like the scooter? i’m thinking of getting one since gas here in southern california has hit the $4.30 mark (for 87 octane), and i can get to work using only surface streets.
i’d really like your opinion! you’re one of the few people i “know” that have a scooter now. (maybe like, your 3 favorite bits, and your 3 least favorite bits of owning this fine piece of machinery).
also, love the helmet!
gas is $4.09 here, and when i fill up the tank i barely have to pay more than that. it’s awesome.
5 good things:
1. easy to use/ride
2. cheap cheap cheap!
3. fun to ride
4. super cute
5. 100+ miles per gallon
3 bad things:
1. can’t use it when it rains
2. not a lot of storage (has a bit)
3. harder for cars to see you
feel free to ask me any other questions!
i guess a few more questions:
1) have you ridden a scooter before this? / was it easy to learn?
2) do you feel that the 50cc engine is strong enough for your everyday needs? (since it tops out at about 30mph) / could you have 2 ppl ride the scooter?
3) do you feel safe driving this at night?
i’m still sort of shopping around. i’m also trying to get more detailed info on the particular laws about scootin’ in CA… sigh. so much to think about!!
but i’ve wanted one forever, so i figure this isn’t a bad time to really look into it. :)
Hi,
In NY state you need a normal car drivers license. No Motorcycle Lic is needed in NY state for a 50cc motor bike. However it must be insured for about 100-250, inspected and registered.
Has governor can not go over 30mph, even if you are going down hill. Most of the roads in our area are 30 or 35mph. Is NOT legal on the expressway.
Small enough to learn on and see if you really like motorcycles before you move up. Seems great for those short commutes. But Lan will give us the best review on that.
Its small great for 1 person, it could fit 2 small people but I don’t think that would be a very good idea.Dad is 6′4 and fits because the seat is long enough to sit back on it for his long legs. I am short and its just perfect. Can’t ride as the helmet is 2 times too big.
Due to its size/weight most likely a daylight vehicle. It has a headlight (on when bikes on) I am sure there are scooter people out there at night but as a mom and driver I’d worry about them seeing me. It does not get really dark until about 9:30 right now. Lan does have a very reflective jacket so time will tell. But her commute so far is during daylight hours.
And don’t forget we live in the North East and have winter.
my mom pretty much answered all your questions, except the easy to ride/learn one. the answer is, it’s so simple to ride and takes minutes to learn. i thought i’d spend a whole weekend learning, as i had never been on one before, but it’s the simplest thing ever. i might even say it’s easier than riding a bike, since you don’t have to pedal!
omg next time we come up 2 ny i MUST drive it!!!
you’ll have to ask my dad, but sounds cool!
Hi Stevie,
You have to have a drivers license to ride on the road, but we have the next best thing just around the corner. Ask the girls about Parking Lot Q, and its attached through-fares M,N,P (watch out for the spiting geese!) they spent many, many hours and miles there.
Love ya, stop in for a summer visit!!!!!!!!!
