CAKE!

IMG_3190

the CAKE concert was last night! oh man, i think it was one of the best shows i’ve been to, ever. they are SO amazing live! like, maybe ever better than on their records. plus they’re in the “big five,” which is just my top five bands in no specific order (they might be giants, mc lars, atom and his package, the aquabats, and cake).

IMG_3182

i went with liz, curls, and alexa. and guess who we saw there? torch! from pinewood! with the four of us there, it was a mini pinewood reunion : )

they played some of my favorites, and of course closed with the best of the best — short skirt / long jacket! highlights included comfort eagle (”he is calling you DUDE!”), the distance, wheels, comanche, stickshifts and safetybelts, frank sinatra, guitar, love you madly, arco arena, and never there. jeez, now that i think about it, every single song was amazing.

also, best photo ever:
IMG_3180

and i caught “short skirt / long jacket” on camera! sounds better in real life though.

mc lars at record archive

IMG_3106

basically, i want to marry lars. stabby and i went to record archive at 4:45ish and i bought five bajillion cd’s (read: eight). lars arrived around 5:00ish, and we had lots of time to chat and such. we talked about atom and his package, because lars saw the pins i have on my bag. you see, aahp is like my second favorite band ever, so lars and i were able to go on and on about how amazing atom is. and he told me that he contributed a song to an aahp tribute album that’ll be released next month! so awesome.

IMG_3111

he also signed my ipod. he added the “j/k!” when i mentioned i don’t steal music, instead i shop at record archive. lol. oh, and he signed some monopoly money i had in my wallet. that makes like forty items i own that are now signed by lars. lolz.

IMG_3107

and he “played” a set, too! i put that in quotes, because i’m not 100% sure that’s what it was. you see, he forgot to bring his laptop (although he did bring his band). so we were treated to an a cappella version of mc lars. definitely a new experience for everyone involved…

in other words, it was a very good time! after the show we talked again and he mentioned that he really liked the websites i’ve designed, and told me to keep being awesome. oh man, i love your mc lars.

musically wonderful things

so here’s the dealio (the dealio of life). mc lars promised he’d be back in the roc sometime in august or september, and i guess he is playing at RIT on saturday, september 20th. the problemo with this is that you can’t buy tickets online, you have to go to the “gordon field house box office” to get the tickets.

questions:
1. liz, you in? curls, you too?
2. mom, can you buy some tickets? they are $15, $12 if you can prove you’re an alumnus.

tom petty

tom petty was effing amazing.

i went with sruthi and megan (not roommate megan, the other one). megan lives in syracuse, so i picked her up from the bus station around 5pm, and then i got sruthi from her house, and we made the one hour trip to darien lake for the show. well, it was supposed to be an hour, but with the traffic going into the park, it was really two hours. but we made it in eventually.

the opener was already playing when we got there, but on the lawn we really couldn’t hear anything because no one seemed too interested and everyone was chatting and such. while we were waiting we got harassed by plenty of drunk men, but soon enough it was tom petty time. the weather was nice and breezy, and it looked like it was going to be a good night.

about ten minutes into the set, the sun had gone down enough for us to see that it was lightning in the background. a half an hour into the set, it started pouring, instantly soaking us. five minutes later, the power went out as they played my top 2 tom petty song, last dance with mary jane. everything was up and running a minute or two later, and they continued from where they left off. by then we were so wet we hardly noticed the rain, but the wind was picking up. the sun was all the way down by then and the temperature had dropped considerably. but this seemed to made the crowd more rowdy, myself and my friends included. it didn’t stop raining all night, and the power went out a few more times. but we stayed, wetter than imaginable, colder than desirable, and having a great time seeing tom petty play our favorite songs. the night ended with my top 1 tom petty song, american girl. awesome.

on the way to the car, we had no choice but to go through the mud, ruining my brand new neon pink chucks. oh well. it took us two hours to get out of the parking lot, carefully switching between idling and turning the car off, due to the fact that the gas was on SUPER-E (what i call the point when the indicator goes past the E). we eventually made it home at around 2:30am. all we wanted to do at that point was take a shower, put on some dry clothes, and get the heck in bed (megan stayed over, sruthi went home). and that’s what we did.

reel big fish & brand new

last night was the reel big fish and brand new show! curls came down from syracuse, and liz drove here from rochester. so it was us three, plus alexa.

IMG_2067

reel big fish was AMAZING. but we already knew that, didn’t we? i think that made the fourth time i saw them play live, and this was probably second favorite time (nothing will beat the last concert when they played S.R. in five billion different genres). they have probably the best stage presence of any bands i’ve seen play, plus their music rocks (skanks?). it’s win-win. and they played most of the songs on my ideal setlist!

IMG_2097

brand new was… okay. the thing is, i am friggin’ obsessed with their first album, your favorite weapon. but i’m not really a fan of their second and third albums, because their sound changed. problem with that is that they think their old sound, the sound i like, is immature, and that they’ve advanced as a band. so they only played two songs from their first album, and they sounded just like their new stuff. so i was like, dang! my ideal setlist was totally off. oh well.

THE REST OF THE PHOTOS CAN BE FOUND HERE!

that’s fresh!

i saw mc lars last night!

IMG_2034
oh my, i love you lars.

(1) i went to the show with curls, jon (her bf), and liz. to burn time before, we went to the movies and saw smart people, which wasn’t the best, but wasn’t the worst. anyway, back to the concert.

(2) the opening bands didn’t suck! and i actually really liked one, called vice grip. they started their set with a cover of “backstreet’s back” and they had a keytar player — and it only went up from there.

(3) mc lars played with his east coast band once again, which i adore. they sounded fantastic. and he played the dvd instead of his usual slideshow, which was also amazing, because it also included non sequiturs between songs.

(4) songs played (only kind of in order from memory): space game, straight outta stockholm, hurricane fresh, uk visa versa, 21 concepts, mr. raven, ahab, if i had a time machine that would be fresh, hipster girl, download this song, signing emo, hot topic is not punk rock, igeneration, and generic crunk rap.

(5) after the show we talked to lars as usual and he signed my new shirt (fourth!) — lanni rocks! -mc lars. when i told him that’s how he signed my shirt last time, he added — p.s. still!. so that was fresh. i love mc lars.

(6) read about my past mc lars experiences: aug. 08, mar. 07, and aug. 06.

*squee*

MC LARS IS PLAYING AT WATERSTREET ON SATURDAY!

this is fantastic. i was just procrastinating and doing my weekly checks at some very important websites (the waterstreet music hall concert schedule and the WBER concert schedule) when i saw his photo (the premiere *squee*). seems as though they just scheduled it yesterday, as my weekly checks are sometimes more-than-weekly and i would have noticed something as amazing as this. omgyay! *majorsquee*

so yeah, super psyched to go. this works out well, actually, as i have the car here for the weekend and i was going to bring it back sunday anyway.

if you’re interesting in attending with me, let me know.

ideal setlists

so, if you hadn’t already heard, brand new and reel big fish are playing at my school on 4/20. and, if you hadn’t already heard, i’m like ridiculously in love with both of those bands. i have all the brand new albums, and all but one rbf album. so i made two ideal, but unlikely, setlists. i say unlikely because my favorite brand new album is “your favorite weapon,” which was their first. from what i’ve heard, they really only play one song from that album (soco amaretto lime). but you know.

BRAND NEW
1. mix tape
2. the quiet things that no one ever knows
3. jude law and a semester abroad
4. okay, i believe you, but my tommy gun don’t
5. secondary
6. seventy times seven
7. sic transit gloria… glory fades
8. degausser
9. tautou
10. magazines
11. play crack the sky
12. the shower scene
13. jaws theme swimming
14. logan to government center
15. last chance to lose your keys

REEL BIG FISH
1. where have you been
2. everything sucks
3. i want your girlfriend to be my girlfriend
4. cannibal
5. a little doubt goes a long way
6. s.r.
7. why do all girls think they’re fat
8. trendy
9. party down
10. my imaginary friend
11. sell out
12. don’t start a band
13. turn the radio off
14. your guts (i hate ‘em)
