ambigram

i’m currently rereading angels & demons for the millionth time, and i’ve become really interested in the ambigrams that are featured in it. an ambigram is a word that can be read the same more than one way. the ones in the book are called rotational ambigrams, and they are words that can be read the same way when flipped over. they’re quite brilliant.

crafting one is ridiculously hard (for me at least), but lauren and i have been working on some ever since i showed her one i did in my calc notebook. neither of us have been able to get “lanni” to work, but i was successful with just “lan”.

riddles

barnabas gikonyo is my chem lecture professor. he’s awesome, and he ends every email with “stay happy, you have incredible value!” plus he told us on the first day to call him barnabas if we were good and professor gikonyo if we were bad. lol.

barnabas: i have a riddle for you. to eat me, you throw away the outside and cook the inside. then you eat the outside and throw away the inside. what am i?
numerous people: corn on the cob!
barnabas: okay, here’s another one. the 22nd and the 24th presidents had the same mother and father, but they were not brothers. how can this be?
class: *silence*
lanni: they were the same man — grover cleveland!

well that was embarrassing. i’ve never had an entire lecture hall stare at me before. well, for a reason other than the fact that my hair is pink.

o icosahedron

i decided i’d ask my magic eight ball icosahedron how i did on the myriad of tests i had this week.

to be specific, the question i asked for each was: “did i do well on my ________ exam?”

CHEM 103: “DON’T COUNT ON IT”

CALC II: “YES”

PSYCH 215: “MOST LIKELY”

MATH 140: “BETTER NOT TELL YOU NOW”

i think the answers are all incorrect, save the last one (because i haven’t actually taken the test yet… lol). i’ll report the icosahedron’s accuracy when i get all my grades in.

the answer

“If showing a creation to probably a critical or menacing girl, anger dominates. O take guard, or she roars and shouts.”

= e

e is a mathematical constant, and it’s the base of the natural logarithm. it’s an irrational number equal to 2.71828 18284 59045 23536…

but how did i figure this out? easy. i counted the number of letters in each word of the sentence. once i got 2, 7, and 1, i knew what the answer was. and no, i had never seen this particular sentence previously, but i had seen a mnemonic like this used for pi before.

if, while reviewing logarithms, your calculus professor wrote the following on the board and said, “find the answer,” could you do it?

“If showing a creation to probably a critical or menacing girl, anger dominates. O take guard, or she roars and shouts.”

because i did. can you?

i was also the first to recognize the fibonacci sequence in math 140 today (we just started patterns). he had only written 1 1 2 and i already knew what it was. lol.

HINT1!: IT’S A NUMBER.
HINT2!: IT’S IRRATIONAL.
HINT3!: IT DEALS WITH LOGS.

bluetooth laser virtual keyboard!

This tiny device laser-projects a keyboard on any flat surface… you can then type away accompanied by simulated key click sounds. It really is true future magic at its best. You’ll be turning heads the moment you pull this baby from your pocket and use it to compose an e-mail on your bluetooth enabled PDA or Cell Phone. With 63 keys and and full size QWERTY layout the Laser Virtual Keyboard can approach typing speeds of a standard keyboard… in a size a little larger than a matchbook.

OMG. it projects a keyboard onto the table, and you can type on it! that is probably the coolest thing ever. if it wasn’t $179.99, i would so buy one.

i’ve started half blood prince and i’m finding that i can’t remember most of it (!) erlack, i better get going, i need to fit in two rereads before deathly hollows comes out.

carly had this brilliant idea of making shirts that are totally plain except for the word “PHYSICS” across the front. so i showed her the awesome t-shirt designer i found online (spreadshirt.com) and we made them, and they came today in the mail. totally awesome. i heart physics.
