the bed project

a few years ago when i still lived in my old room, i decided that i hated having head and foot boards on my bed, mostly because when i sleep on my stomach my feet hang off the end. so my mom helped me buy some wood to make new, shorted ones. we measured, drilled holes, the whole nine yards.

the only thing was, something went a bit wrong in the installation, and it split the wood of my existing bed frame on one side. i didn’t mind at the time and simply wrapped it up in neon pink duct tape.

when i began obsessing over interior design, the fact that my bed frame was plain wood and not white like the rest of my furniture drove me absolutely crazy. it didn’t help that the head and foot boards i made were a totally different kind of wood than the existing frame.

it’s taken me two years, but i’ve finally replaced the wood that split (my sister and i had the same bed until she got her new one, so i used pieces of her bed), and i’ve painted it white. it’s taken me three days, but i think it has turned out great. it makes me very happy : )

chronological progress photos, of the original project to this new one, are under the cut.

mmm shelves

so instead of taking good notes today in chem, i instead thought it would be a good time to draw pictures of potential shelving situations for behind my door in my room at home.

the best one showcased some rounded corner shelves, going all the way up the wall. but i never really considered how they work slash how to install them. i would prefer something similar to the shelves i have now, with brackets on the wall and such, but everywhere i looked online sold single shelves like that for like fifteen bucks. pshw, yeah right. i did find this shelving unit for $44.95, but since i’d be stacking like three of them on top of each other, that would be quite pricey. plus they’re not white shelves anyway, which is my ideal. i also found this, which is getting a bit closer, but i don’t know if they’re stackable or not.

got to quit daydreaming about shelves when i could be doing better things.

ETA: thinking about shelves got me thinking about beds that would eliminate the need for said shelves. ideally, i’d prefer a bed that has a lot of storage underneath, like this bed. it’s labeled as a kids bed though. what’s the difference? well anyway, i found this bed too, which is conveniently not a kids bed. but it’s inconveniently five billion dollars.

gah, must get out of la-la land.

spackled my battleship

icon meme on the ol’ livejournal. check it out, it’s awesome.

75 MPH winds today. i may or may not have broken the car door. video will be up tomorrow.

last night my mom and i attempted to put up a set of shelves in my room. we ended the night with one bracket fairly firmly screwed on, the other precariously attached, and two large holes in the wall. but it all worked out in the end, the shelves are currently attached securely to the wall, and the holes have been spackled.

BINDY II

so, i finished my scrapbook. i managed to fit almost all my stuff (stuff that can be scrapbooked, at least). so i couldn’t help but laugh out loud when i read christian’s comment on yesterday’s post: “a scrapbook is a good idea, you cant go wrong with a little book that holds a whole lot of years.” little? HAH. this scrapbook is INSANITY.

some of you may recognize “bindy,” my old binder from 9th-11th grade (i posted about bindy here). he retired at the end of 11th grade, there was no way that binder could make it through another year. i duct taped it to my wall last summer after pulling off the binds with a pair of pliers. so this binder isn’t exactly “bindy,” it’s really a new (to me) 5-inch binder—i didn’t even know they made 5-inch binders—with a facade taped on.

i’ll jury rig your face

yesterday i decided that instead of duct taping a boom box to the dash of my mom’s car, i would instead velcro some speakers there that i can plug into anything with a headphone jack (ipod, diskman, cassette player). my mom and i concluded that i should pro’ly stop jury rigging everything i own, because most of my stuff is now broken (i.e. my desk chair with a duct taped on back that keeps falling off, my diagonal closet shelving, et cetera).

ju • ry • rig verb, noun, -rigged, -rig·ging.
1. any makeshift machinery or temporary repair using improvised materials and parts
2. to assemble quickly or from whatever is at hand, esp. for temporary use: to jury-rig stage lights using automobile headlights.

you know what this means? that i really shouldn’t have to use this setup for very long, as the definition indicates that jury rigging is just temporary. so, if you forgot my birthday and feel bad about it, you can buy me a car stereo, with a hookup for my ipod. this one on ebay is pretty much perfect.
